Mathematics is important in everyday life. At Swanwick School and Sports College, we tailor the learning within mathematics to individual needs to allow students to reach their full potential. The Mathematics teaching and learning at Swanwick School and Sports College is geared towards enabling each pupil to develop within their capabilities; not only the mathematical skills and understanding required for later life, but also an enthusiasm and fascination about maths itself.

It is important for mathematics learning to move through stages, practical, visual, moving to abstract, learnt facts, knowledge, reasoning and being able to make connections with learning. In addition to this, concepts and challenges are also important. Active learning, exploring, creating and thinking critically are important skills. We aim to make independent learners who can select equipment they need to meet a challenge. Therefore classroom resources are to hand and all reasoning and methods are valued.

At Swanwick School and Sports College, we follow the updated maths objectives from the new curriculum and teach ‘themed’ weeks for each area of maths. These topics are repeated throughout the year in line with the national curriculum expectations. This is extremely beneficial for our students as they have opportunities throughout the year to grasp an area they are less confident in. To equip our students for life-long learning, we use the maths objectives to steer our learning towards ‘real-life maths’ which is also known as functional skills. This allows our students to make vital links between their learning and the wider environment. Teaching in this particular style focuses heavily on students understanding the vocabulary of mathematics and being able to apply this in a range of contexts such as budgeting, shopping, timetables, shape etc.

We strive for an ethos where ‘having a go’ and ‘keep trying ‘are the main ideas. We support our children to develop the skills they need to tackle problems, by having a classroom culture where all children are happy and secure in having a go and one where questioning and deep thinking are valued. Our mathematical learning environment allows our students to thrive and feel confident within this area. Age appropriate qualifications that are achieved include OCR entry level examinations, functional skills assessments, SATs and GCSEs. Teachers of mathematics in the school ensure that the students are fully prepared before entering any assessments to ensure the best success for our students.
