The Positive Support Intervention at SSSC is based on the principles of the Derbyshire Behaviour Support Service Early Intervention Strategy and aims to support pupils' social, emotional and mental wellbeing, enabling them to engage positively with school life and achieve their full potential.
The intervention is led by our Positive Support Lead and Positive Support Workers, who provide targeted support to pupils identified as benefiting from additional emotional, behavioural or social development opportunities.
Support is delivered through planned, personalised sessions that are tailored to each pupil's individual needs. Sessions are typically delivered on a one-to-one basis, although small-group work may be used to help pupils develop social communication, emotional regulation and positive peer relationships where appropriate.
Activities may include PSHE-based discussions, therapeutic stories, creative activities, emotional literacy work, sensory-based support, games, anger management strategies, problem-solving activities and other therapeutic approaches designed to develop self-awareness, resilience and confidence.
Sessions take place within dedicated support spaces and are designed to provide a safe, nurturing environment where pupils can explore feelings, develop coping strategies and strengthen their ability to access learning successfully.
Positive Support is delivered as a twelve intervention programme. The length, frequency and focus of the intervention are determined by the individual needs of the pupil and are reviewed regularly to ensure the support remains effective. Outcomes are monitored throughout the intervention, with pupils being supported to apply the skills they develop within the classroom, around school and in the wider community.
This intervention has become a highly successful element of our wider pastoral provision, helping pupils to develop the skills, confidence and emotional resilience needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
